Consequential strangers are not always good to or for us. Many of our daily hassles come from neighbors, office mates, and others thrust upon us by geography or situation. Such acquaintances are also more likely than intimates to make rash judgments, spread gossip, or lie to us. And although we think we live in an egalitarian society, in our dealings with acquaintances, we can’t help but notice that some are more equal than others.
